The Importance of Resets

Andrew Banno

During this past spring semester, a key lesson I have learned has been how essential resets are when you are doing work or a task that is mentally or physically exhausting. This idea that we perpetuate by just pushing through ends up resulting in the task taking much longer as well as it being worse in content than if you would have just taken a reset. Resets for me consist of exercise. Taking an hour to go for a run and stretch is so worth the time as I am able to lock back in after this reset has happened. As a result, I encourage everyone to find their reset. No human on the planet can just work consistently and produce high-quality work for a super extended period of time. If this is the case, they might not be human. Hahaha But for me, three hours is the sweet spot. I can lock in and do schoolwork for three hours consistently without distractions and after that, a reset needs to occur. Casey Neistat even uses resets which many people can’t believe his workaholic attitude. He uses runs as a way to substitute for lack of sleep as the run energizes him and provides a reset in his life. He will go to bed at 12 and wake up at 5 a.m., just so he can run until 7 a.m. before he starts his day. This shows the extreme scenario of a reset and love for running, yet is something I find so interesting. Today, after working on my website, which is going to be the platform that these blog posts are going to be posted on,(website coming soon…) I decided to go for a run. I felt distracted and mentally fatigued and that 25 min run was the reset that I needed. Once again, people will argue about this idea of time poverty and that they don’t have the time to take a reset, yet even 20 minutes of exercise can completely change the feeling of your body! Next time when fatigue sets in, do something that allows you to take your mind off of the schoolwork you have to complete, allowing you the ability to live in the present and enjoy. Chances are when you go to settle back down to finish up your schoolwork, you will be so much more effective!
